Brighton Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Verbruggen (Steele) · Wieffer (Kadioglou) · Van Hecke (Coppala) · Boscalgi (Dunk) · De Cuyper · Baleba · Ayari · Minteh (March) · Rutter · Mitoma · Welbeck (Tzimas)Brighton focuses on a high press and a vertical style of play using a 4-2-4 formation. The primary goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and hit in behind the opposition defense with speed. This lineup is designed to keep the ball in the attacking third and force the opposition into mistakes.
Verbruggen starts in goal to command the area and sweep behind the back line. The defense uses a high line with Wieffer at right back and De Cuyper at left back. Van Hecke and Boscalgi form the central pairing, where Van Hecke acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Boscalgi must cover the space when the full backs push up, and the entire unit works to squeeze the space and set the offside trap.
The midfield consists of a double pivot featuring Baleba and Ayari. Baleba acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and presses aggressively to win it back high up the pitch. Ayari works to shield the defense and connects the defensive unit to the attacking line. They must recycle possession and pick up runners to ensure the team maintains control when the ball moves between the thirds.
An aggressive front line features Mitoma and Minteh as wide wingers, with Rutter and Welbeck acting as the two forwards. Mitoma uses his dribbling to isolate defenders and cut inside to create scoring chances. Minteh provides width on the right to stretch the defense and pull the marker away from the center. Rutter and Welbeck work as a partnership to press the opposition back line and look to play a one-two to break the line. The wingers aim to get to the byline and whip it in to the two strikers.
This Brighton lineup offers significant speed of transition to catch opponents on the break. The team creates wide overloads by having De Cuyper and Wieffer overlap the wingers to provide extra passing options. They also benefit from numerical superiority in the final third when the wingers and full backs combine to overwhelm the opposition defense.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for high intensity and direct attacking. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to play out from the back or play with a high line.
