Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Molina · Giménez · Le Normand · Ruggeri · Gallagher · de Paul · Griezmann · J. Álvarez · Almada · Oblak · M. LlorenteLooking to play a game of patience and lightning fast transitions, Atlético operates with a 5-2-3. This lineup is built to remain defensively solid and rely on quick breaks to score. The focus is on squeezing the space in the middle and forcing opponents to play wide.
Oblak guards the goal, providing a reliable presence. The defensive unit works as a back five. Giménez and Le Normand act as the central pair, while M. Llorente holds the center to sweep behind the line. Molina and Ruggeri play as attacking wing backs, tasked to push high and provide width in the attacking phase. This unit can drop into a low block to protect the lead or hold a higher line to compress the midfield.
The midfield features a two man pairing of de Paul and Gallagher. de Paul acts as the carrier, moving the ball from deep and using his passing range to switch play. Gallagher brings immense pressing intensity to trigger a press and win the ball back high up the pitch. Together, they must defend the zone in front of the back five and cover the wide areas when the wing backs push up.
The attack utilizes three forwards. J. Álvarez leads the line as a pressing centre forward, working to pin the last defender and harass the ball carrier. Griezmann plays as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create chances, while Almada stays wide to stretch the defence. This allows the team to attack in combinations, using the width from the wing backs to deliver crosses or finding J. Álvarez with through balls.
A major strength of this formation is the compactness when defending. By sitting in a mid block, Atlético makes it hard for teams to play through the lines. The team also benefits from speed of transition, moving from a defensive block to an attacking phase in seconds. The wide overloads from Molina and Ruggeri often catch the opposition out of position.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a rock solid base for a team that loves to counter at pace. It is best suited for games against heavy possession sides where the goal is to deny the turn and strike quickly.
