Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Gabriel · Saliba · Timber · MLS · Eze · Rice · Zubimendi · Saka · Isak · Gyokeres · RayaArsenal relies on a heavy defensive presence and a direct style of play with this 5-4-1 formation. The lineup aims to absorb pressure and strike quickly through organized banks of players. It is a formation built to sit deep and invite the opponent forward before exploiting the space left behind them.
Isak plays between the posts to protect the goal while the defensive unit stays compact. A back three consists of Zubimendi, Rice, and Gyokeres who work to clear the lines and win the second ball. Zubimendi acts as a ball playing defender to start moves, while Rice provides aerial strength and Gyokeres covers the space behind the wider players. Eze operates as a right wing back to provide width and track back when needed, while Saka plays as the left wing back to push up the flank. This unit works to maintain a narrow defensive block to deny the turn of any central attackers.
The midfield works as a flat four to squeeze the space between the lines. Gabriel and Saliba occupy the central roles to connect the defence and attack. Saliba uses his passing range to find teammates while Gabriel moves to press aggressively and win the ball back. Timber occupies the right side to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces. MLS stays wide on the left to stretch the defence and provide options to recycle possession. This four-man line makes it difficult for the opposition to play through the middle.
In the attacking phase, Arsenal uses Raya as a lone striker to lead the press from the front. Raya focuses on holding up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition by using the width provided by Eze and Saka. When the ball moves forward, Timber and MLS can arrive late into the box to create a numerical advantage. The goal is to use the wing backs to whip it in for Raya to find a way through.
Arsenal gains a major advantage from the compactness when defending in a low block. This setup allows them to stay solid and force the opponent to play wide. The presence of Saliba and Rice in the middle of the defensive line creates a very hard unit to break down. They can also shift quickly to double up on wide players when the ball is moved to the flanks.
This 5-4-1 formation is designed for a team that wants to defend deep and hit on the break. It is best suited for facing high possession teams that leave space behind their defensive line.
