Ekitike · Isak · Salah · Wirtz · Gravenberch · MacAllister · Frimpong · Kerkez · Van Dijk · Konate · Alisson

Liverpool prioritizes a defensive identity that relies on sitting deep and hitting teams on the break. This 5-4-1 formation is built to protect the centre and exploit space during transitions. The team looks to win the ball in a mid-block and move the ball quickly to the front line to catch opponents out of position.

Isak operates as the goalkeeper to command the area and clear the lines. The defensive line utilizes a back five to create a narrow defensive block. Salah acts as the left wing back and is tasked to overlap the winger and provide width. Ekitike plays as the right wing back to stretch the defence. In the middle, Wirtz, Gravenberch, and MacAllister form a central trio. Wirtz acts as the ball playing defender to play out from the back. Gravenberch and MacAllister defend zonally and work to cover the spaces left by the advancing wing backs.

The midfield features a four man unit. Van Dijk and Konate act as a double pivot to shield the defence. Van Dijk uses his aerial strength and passing range to distribute from deep and break the line. Konate uses his physicality to win the second ball and protect the middle. Kerkez and Frimpong act as wide midfielders who must track back to help the defence and press in a mid-block. They connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward when they win possession.

Alisson plays as a lone striker to lead the line. He must hold up the ball to bring others into play. The attack is built through quick transitions where Kerkez and Frimpong look to cross on the run or whip it in to the centre. The goal is to find the feet of the striker or knock it in behind the opposition defence. This formation aims to isolate defenders in one on one situations when the wingers can carry the ball forward and search for cutbacks from the byline.

One major advantage is the compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for the opposition to play through the lines or find gaps in the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition when the team wins the ball and can hit in behind on the transition. The team can also use the wing backs to create wide overloads in the final third.

This 5-4-1 formation provides a solid defensive base for Liverpool. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and play with a high line.
