Starting Lineup

Bischof · Seidl · Y. Demir · Radulovic · Grgic · Amane · Bolla · J. Auer · Cvetkovic · Horn · Hedl

SK Rapid focuses on a heavy high press and aggressive verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opponent before they can get organized. By pushing so many bodies forward, the team looks to control the middle and middle thirds through constant pressure and rapid transitions.

Hedl stays between the posts to guard the goal as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders with Horn and Cvetkovic. Both defenders must stay alert to cover large amounts of space behind them because the team plays with a high line. Horn and Cvetkovic act as the primary ball playing defenders to initiate play, and they must be ready to step up to catch opponents offside or sweep behind the defensive line when the press is bypassed.

The midfield is packed to dominate the center of the pitch. Bolla and J. Auer sit in a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the two central defenders. They work to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly. Moving ahead, Amane and Grgic act as two inverted eights who occupy the half spaces to link the play. They carry the ball forward and try to break the line with vertical passes. Y. Demir plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, where he looks to find the feet of the attackers or arrive late into the box to add an extra threat.

In the attacking third, SK Rapid uses three players across the front to stretch the defense. Seidl and Radulovic operate as wide wingers who stay high to pin the opposition full backs. Seidl often looks to cut inside to create space for the midfield, while Radulovic works to stretch the width of the pitch. Bischof leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, tasked with harrying the opposition back line and holding up the ball to allow others to join the attack. The goal is to create combinations in tight spaces or deliver quick passes into the channels.

This setup offers significant numerical superiority in the midfield, making it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The presence of five players in the middle allows the team to squeeze the space and trigger a press in coordinated waves. Another advantage is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations once the midfield has bypassed the initial block.

The 2-5-3 formation provides SK Rapid with a highly aggressive presence that prioritizes immediate ball recovery. It is a formation best suited for games where the team wants to dominate the ball and overwhelm the opponent through high intensity.
