Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MLS · Saliba · Gabriel · Timber · Raya · Zubimendi · Rice · Ø · Saka · Isak · GyokeresArsenal looks to win the ball high up the pitch and strike with verticality through a 5-2-3. This formation is built to press the opposition and use width to stretch the defence during transitions. The Gunners aim to dominate through ball retention and quick forward movements once the ball is won.
Raya sits between the lines to play short from the back and act as a sweeping presence. The back five consists of Zubimendi, Saliba, and Gabriel, where Zubimendi acts as a ball playing defender to help build play. Saliba and Gabriel provide aerial strength and cover the space behind the wing backs. Timber operates as a right wing back to provide width, while MLS acts as the left wing back to push high. This defensive unit maintains a compact shape to deny the turn of opposition attackers.
The midfield works as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Rice acts as the carrier who drives forward with the ball and provides defensive cover. Ø links the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession and finding space between the lines. This duo must be ready to pick up runners and squeeze the space in a mid-block when Arsenal do not have the ball.
In the attacking phase, Arsenal employs three attackers to pin the last defender. Gyokeres acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and hold up the ball for others. Saka plays as an inverted winger on the right who looks to cut inside and create chances, while Isak occupies the left side to make runs in behind. The team uses the wing backs to provide overloads, allowing the forwards to find the feet of the striker or exploit the half spaces.
This lineup offers significant advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. The presence of three central defenders provides security against long balls, while the wide players create wide overloads when Timber and MLS push forward. Arsenal can also shift quickly to a mid-block to maintain compactness when defending a lead.
This 5-2-3 formation focuses on high pressing and rapid vertical transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to play through a crowded midfield.
