St (Slicer) · Cam/Cf (Awb [C]) · Lm (Btr) · Rm (Dudub) · Cdm/Dm (Pelapp) · Lb/Lwb (Grass) · Cb (Scopzie) · Cm/Cdm (Centeroa) · Cb (Enantito) · Rb/Rwb (Imbiz) · Gk/LeonManchester United aims to win the ball back and hit quickly in a 4-5-1. This formation is built to play a game of control in the middle and quick transitions. The goal for the team is to stay compact and limit the space available to the opponent in the central areas.
Leon sits between the posts to organize the defense and command the area. The back four consists of Lb, Rb, and both Cb players working as a unit. These defenders maintain a flat back four to hold a mid-block or sit deep in a low block. The Cb and Cb focus on defending zonally and winning the header when the opposition delivers a cross. The Lb and Rb must track back to cover the wide areas and prevent crosses from reaching the box. The defensive unit works to stay close together to deny the turn to any advancing attackers.
A five man midfield acts as the engine of this formation. The Cm and Cdm sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and win the second ball. The Cm and Cdm also work to connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back. In the wider areas, the Rm and Lm provide width and help to press in a mid-block to win it back high up the pitch. The Cam acts as an attacking ten behind the St to find the feet of the St or arrive late into the box. This group aims to compress the midfield and force a long ball from the opponent.
The attack relies on a lone St to hold up the ball and act as a target man. To provide support, the Rm and Lm act as wide wingers who can cut inside to create chances. The Cam plays as a second striker in the hole to link up play between the lines. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition by using the pace of the St. The wingers look to spread wide to stretch the defence and then whip it in toward the central areas or cut it back from the byline.
This formation offers great compactness when defending in a mid-block. By having five players in the middle, the team can create numerical superiority in midfield and easily cut off the passing lane. Another strength is the ability to switch play quickly from one side to the other using the Rm and Lm to isolate a one on one wide.
Man Utd serves as a way to frustrate dominant teams by staying organized and compact. It is best used when facing opponents that control possession and need to be stopped in the middle third.
