Starting Lineup

Etikike · Gakpo · Wirtz · Salah · Szoboszlai · Gravenberch · Kerkez · Van Dijk · Konaté · Frimpong · Alisson

Liverpool aims to win the ball high up the pitch and attack with pace. The lineup uses a 5-2-3 to stretch the opposition and create attacking chances through quick transitions. This formation is built to play a vertical game where the forwards and midfielders look to hit in behind the defense as soon as possession is regained.

Alisson acts as the goalkeeper to manage the area behind the defense. The back five features Gravenberch in the center to help play out from the back. Van Dijk and Konaté operate as the central defenders, where Van Dijk uses his aerial strength and reading of the game to sweep behind a high line. Kerkez and Frimpong act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and overlap the wingers. The defensive unit functions by squeezing the space in a mid block when the initial press is bypassed.

The midfield consists of a two man pairing of Szoboszlai and Wirtz. These two act as the link to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Szoboszlai uses his driving runs to carry the ball forward, while Wirtz looks to play through the lines and create chances in the half spaces. They must work together to press aggressively to win the ball high and pick up runners. When defending, they drop to shield the back five and prevent the opposition from finding space between the lines.

Liverpool attacks with three forwards positioned across the front. Etikike acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Gakpo stays wide on the left to stretch the defense, while Salah operates as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and threaten the goal. Salah often uses his dribbling to create space in tight areas. The wing backs, Kerkez and Frimpong, provide the width to ensure the team can whip it in or deliver early crosses when the opposition defense shifts too far inside.

This formation offers the advantage of wide overloads from overlapping full backs. Because Kerkez and Frimpong push so high, they double up with Gakpo and Salah to overwhelm the opposition full backs. The team also finds success with the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press that forces a long ball. This allows the team to win the second ball and break quickly.

This 5-2-3 lineup provides a balance between defensive security and rapid attacking transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and can be punished in behind.
