Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
OBLAK (Musso) · Llorente (Pubill/Molina) · Le NORMAND (Gimenez) · HANCKO (Veiga/Lenglet) · RUGGERI (Galan) · CARDOSO (Koke) · BARRIOS (Gallagher) · E.MILLOT (Griezmann) · SIMEONE (Llorente) · A.BAENA (T.Almada) · J.ALVAREZ (Sorloth)Prioritising a compact defensive block and quick transitions, Atlético operates with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and soak up pressure before hitting teams with sudden verticality. The goal is to squeeze the space between the lines and use a dense midfield to congest the centre of the pitch.
Jan Oblak guards the goal for Atlético, providing a reliable presence to sweep behind the high line. The defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Hancko and Le Normand acting as the central defenders. Hancko and Le Normand must be dominant in the air and ready to step up to intercept passes, while also being prepared to cover large areas of space if the high line is breached. Because there are only two central defenders, the back line must hold a disciplined position to prevent runners from getting behind.
A heavy five man midfield serves as the engine of this formation. Ruggeri and Llorente act as a double pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. Ruggeri provides stability while Llorente uses his engine to carry the ball forward and cover ground. In front of them, Cardoso operates in the middle to connect the defensive and attacking lines. The half spaces are occupied by Barrios and E.Millot, who act as attacking midfielders to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. This midfield group aims to compress the midfield and deny the opponent time on the ball.
The attacking front three stretches the defence through various movements. A.Baena operates on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create chances, while Simeone stays wide on the right to provide width. J.Alvarez leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. This front line works to pin the last defender and create space for the attacking midfielders to arrive late into the box. The team looks to break quickly and use combinations in tight spaces once the ball is won.
This formation offers several tactical advantages, primarily the ability to create a mid-block that is very hard to play through. By using a five man midfield, Atlético can achieve numerical superiority in the centre to control the tempo or win back possession. The team also benefits from the speed of transition, as the wide players and the double pivot can quickly shift the play from a defensive stance to an attacking one.
Atlético relies on this 2-5-3 to stifle dominant sides by occupying the central zones. It is a setup best suited for games where the team needs to defend a lead or play against opponents who rely heavily on central passing.
