Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Giménez · Hancko · Le Normand · Molina · M. Llorente · Gallagher · Koke · J. Álvarez · Almada · Griezmann · OblakPrioritising defensive solidity and rapid transitions, Atlético use a 3-4-3 formation to control space. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block before hitting teams on the break. The team relies on a compact unit to deny space between the lines and uses wide players to stretch the opposition when they win the ball back high up the pitch.
Oblak acts as the last line of defence, providing reliable shot stopping and commanding his area. Ahead of him, the back three of Hancko, Giménez, and Le Normand operates as a narrow defensive block. Hancko covers the left side while Le Normand provides cover on the right, leaving Giménez to lead the line as a dominant presence in the air. This trio works to squeeze the space and ensures the team stays compact when defending against central runners.
The midfield operates with two central players, Koke and Gallagher, who connect the defensive and attacking lines. Koke, the captain (C), acts as the deep lying playmaker, dropping into pockets of space to recycle possession and find teammates. Gallagher brings immense pressing intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch, often driving forward with the ball to create chaos. Molina and M. Llorente provide the width, acting as wing backs who push high to support the attack but must track back to form a five man line when defending.
In the final third, Atlético employ three attackers to pin the last defender. J. Álvarez leads the line as a pressing centre forward, constantly looking to run in behind or link up play. Griezmann operates from the left, often cutting inside to find pockets of space and use his passing range to create chances. Almada stays wide on the right to isolate defenders in one on one situations, providing a threat through his dribbling. The front three work in combination to pull defenders out of position and create openings for late runs.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Molina and M. Llorente join the attackers. This forces the opposition to stretch their defensive line, leaving gaps in the middle. Furthermore, the presence of Koke and Gallagher allows Atlético to achieve numerical superiority in midfield, making it difficult for opponents to play through the middle without facing heavy pressure.
Atlético rely on a disciplined defensive block and quick transitions to punish opponents. This 3-4-3 formation is best suited for facing teams that commit too many players forward and leave space behind their defense.
