Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Gyökeres · Ødegaard · Havertz · Saka · Zubimendi · Rice · Timber · Calafiori · G. Magalhães · Saliba · RayaArsenal aims to dominate the pitch through a high press and heavy possession, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the center of the pitch and squeeze the opposition in their own half. The team works to win the ball back high up the pitch to attack before the opponent can settle into a rhythm. By spreading the width through the attackers, they force the opposition to stretch the defence.
Raya operates as the lone goalkeeper behind a very high back line. Saliba and G. Magalhães act as the two central defenders in this lineup. Saliba uses his composure and reading of the game to lead the defensive unit, while G. Magalhães provides aerial strength to defend the box. This two man line relies on being able to cover vast amounts of space behind them to stop attackers who try to hit in behind on the transition.
The midfield is a five man unit. Timber and Calafiori sit in the defensive roles to shield the two defenders. Zubimendi and Rice occupy the central spaces, with Rice using his ball carrying and defensive work rate to drive the play forward. Zubimendi helps to recycle possession and protect the area in front of the back line. Havertz plays as an attacking ten, occupying the space between the midfield and the attack to link the lines. This five man unit allows Arsenal to press in a mid-block or push high to win the ball back.
Up front, the team utilizes three attackers to pin the opposition back. Gyökeres acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the hunt from the front. Saka plays as an inverted winger on the right, using his dribbling to cut inside and find space in the box. Ødegaard operates from the left, using his passing range to find runners and play through the lines. The trio works to create runs in behind and combine in tight spaces to break the opposition defence.
This formation offers immense numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By having five players in the middle, Arsenal can easily outnumber opponents and win the second ball. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very hard for opponents to play out from the back. The lineup creates constant pressure on the opposition's defensive line.
The 2-5-3 formation provides a powerful way to dominate games through central control and aggressive pressing. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to handle intense pressure or lack the speed to exploit a high line.
