Roma relies on a compact defensive identity to win games, using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before striking on the transition. The main goal is to keep the lines tight and deny space for the opposition to play through the middle.

Rui Patricio starts between the posts to command the area and organize the back line. The defense works as a back five with Hummels acting as the captain and leader of the unit. Hummels provides aerial strength and reads the game to intercept passes. Beside him, Gonalons and Wijnaldum operate as the central defensive trio to provide coverage and win the second ball. Smalling plays as a right wing back to provide width and track back when needed, while Fabricio works on the left as an attacking wing back to support the flanks. The unit stays narrow to force the opposition wide.

A four man midfield sits ahead of the defensive line to clog the passing lanes. McCarthy and Tabanou act as the central engine to shield the defence and recycle possession. Dzsudzsak, the vice captain, operates from the right side of the midfield to help control the tempo and move the ball forward. Jara plays in the hole as an attacking midfielder to connect the midfield to the lone striker. This group works to press in a mid-block and pick up runners when the ball enters the middle third.

The attack is built around a lone striker, Gomis, who acts as a target man to hold up the ball. Gomis must fight the centre backs and win the header to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. Jara works closely with the striker to link up play and find the feet of Gomis in tight spaces. When Roma wins the ball, the wing backs Smalling and Fabricio push high to stretch the defence and provide crosses. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition once the ball is won.

Roma offers great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to break the lines. The presence of Hummels allows the team to maintain a solid central block that is hard to bypass. Another advantage is the ability to use the width of Smalling and Fabricio to create quick counters. This provides enough numbers in the box to support Gomis during attacking phases.

This 5-4-1 formation is designed for a team that wants to stay solid and rely on sudden breaks. It is best suited for matches against heavy possession teams where Roma can soak up pressure and strike.
