Starting Lineup

VLAHOVIĆ · R. LEÁO · JASHARI · RICCI · JIMENEZ · SAELEMAEKERS · PAVLOVIC · THIAW · TOMORI · PULISIC · M. MAIGNAN

Milan focuses on quick transitions and high pressing through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup relies on verticality to catch opponents out of position as soon as they lose control of the ball. By using a compact mid-block, the team aims to squeeze the space between the lines and win the ball in central areas to launch direct attacks.

M. MAIGNAN operates as the goalkeeper, using his sweeping ability to cover the space behind a high defensive line. The back three consists of THIAW, PAVLIC, and TOMORI, who function as a zonal line to protect the central area. TOMORI and THIAW focus on winning the header and clearing the lines, while PAVLIC acts as a ball playing defender to start play from the back. The unit works to maintain a narrow defensive block to deny passing lanes through the center.

In the middle of the pitch, RICCI acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Alongside him, JASHARI and PULISIC form a central pairing where PULISIC uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward and break the line. The midfield connects the defensive unit to the attack, with players like JASHARI looking to win the second ball and provide stability. This three man midfield allows the team to control the tempo and transition from a defensive stance to an attacking one quickly.

The attacking front line uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. R. LEÁO plays as a left sided forward, using his dribbling to cut inside and create chances, while VLAHOVIĆ acts as the main target man to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball. On the flanks, SAELEMAEKERS and JIMENEZ act as wide midfielders who provide width and overlap the wingers. This setup creates runs in behind and allows for quick combinations in tight spaces when moving into the final third.

One major advantage for Milan is the ability to create wide overloads when SAELEMAEKERS and JIMENEZ push up to support the attack. The team also benefits from its speed of transition, as the central midfielders and forwards can move forward in coordinated waves to hit the opposition on the break. This formation provides compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.

This 3-5-2 formation is built to exploit teams that play with a high defensive line through rapid vertical movement. It is best suited for games where Milan can win the ball high up the pitch and use the pace of the front two.
