Rijeka Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zlomislić · Devetak · Majstorović · Radeljić · Lasickas · Dantas · Janković · Petrovič · Fruk · Menalo · ČopRijeka prioritizes being defensively solid and hitting teams on the break using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and stay compact, waiting for the right moment to strike. The goal is to frustrate the opponent by closing down central spaces and forcing them into wide areas where it is harder to create chances.
Zlomislić guards the goal within a back five. Petrovič sits in the center of the defense to act as the main anchor, while Majstorović and Radeljić operate as the wide center backs. These three cover the central zone to ensure the middle remains closed. Devetak and Lasickas act as attacking wing backs, pushing high up the pitch to provide width when the team has the ball, but they must track back quickly to maintain the defensive line.
The midfield functions as a line of four to protect the back five and control the center. Menalo and Janković occupy the wide positions on the left and right to help the wing backs and track opposition runners. In the middle, Fruk and Dantas work to control the tempo. Dantas can drive forward with the ball to link the lines, while Fruk can drop deeper to pick up the ball from the defenders and recycle possession.
Up front, Čop plays as a lone striker to lead the line. He is expected to hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield or the wing backs. The attack relies on quick transitions where the team looks to find Čop through the lines or use the wide players to stretch the defense. Menalo and Janković often push up to support him, creating combinations to break the lines. The wing backs, Devetak and Lasickas, look to deliver crosses once they get to the byline.
One major advantage for Rijeka is the compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The five defenders provide a wall that is difficult to penetrate, especially in the air. Another strength is the ability to counter at pace once the ball is won. By using the width of the wing backs and the movement of the midfielders, the team can quickly shift the play and exploit spaces left behind an attacking opponent.
This 5-4-1 formation is a disciplined way to maintain a solid defensive block while staying dangerous on the break. It is best used against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their full backs.
