Starting Lineup

Guerreiro · Laimer · Kim · Upamecano · Kane · Goretzka · Kimmich · Wanner · Olise · L. Díaz · Neuer

FC Bayern seeks to control every inch of the pitch through a high press and heavy central presence. This aggressive lineup uses a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm opponents in their own half. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately pin the opposition back with a wave of attacking players.

Manuel Neuer starts the build up from the back, often acting as a sweeper behind a very high defensive line. The defensive unit relies on a back two consisting of Kim and Upamecano who must be ready to cover huge spaces behind them. Kim and Upamecano act as ball playing defenders to initiate play, while also needing to be dominant in the air to deal with long balls. Because the team pushes so far forward, these two central defenders must be quick to intercept any direct passes sent into the space behind them.

The midfield is a dense block designed to dominate the center of the park. Laimer and Guerreiro sit in a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Kimmich operates as a creative force from deep, using his wide passing range to switch play or break the line. Goretzka acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward, providing physical presence and making late runs into the box. Wanner plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, operating in the pockets to link the midfield and attack. This five man midfield ensures FC Bayern always has players to win the second ball.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. L. Díaz and Olise act as wide wingers who stay high to provide width, though they often cut inside to create space for others. Kane plays as a central striker, using his link up play to hold up the ball and find the feet of the runners. The front three press the opposition back line relentlessly, trying to force a long ball or a mistake. This attacking trio works in combinations to create runs in behind or isolate defenders in one on one situations.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to control the tempo and squeeze the space in the middle. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with Wanner and the front three triggering the press while the midfield line steps up to support. This creates a compact block that makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines.

FC Bayern uses this intense 2-5-3 formation to dominate possession and suffocate the opponent. This lineup is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a low block through sheer numbers and high pressure.
