River aims to dominate through a high press and heavy central presence using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and overwhelm the opposition in the middle thirds. By pushing many players forward, River looks to suffocate opponents and force errors through constant pressure.

H. Son acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very high line. De Zanqui and N. Gómez operate as a pair of central defenders who must stay alert to cover the space left behind the back line. These two central defenders must be ready to win the second ball or step up to intercept passes before the opponent can exploit the gaps. The defensive unit relies on quick recovery runs to manage the risks of such a high defensive position.

The midfield is a massive five man block designed to control the center of the pitch. Tolisso and K. Mónaco form a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and recycle possession. Guderhessen occupies the center of the park to connect the defensive and attacking lines. B. Alcáraz and D. Scayt operate in the half spaces to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. This massive midfield unit works to compress the space and deny the turn to the opposition.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Marani leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and link play. Burchet plays as a wide winger on the left to stretch the defence, while L. Rodríguez operates on the right to provide width. These attackers work in combinations to create runs in behind and allow the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The front three focus on pressing the opposition back line to trigger a press in a mid-block.

A major strength of this River lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to dominate ball possession. The heavy presence of five midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Additionally, the formation provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it hard for the opposition to build out from the back.

This formation is a high risk, high reward system centered on aggressive territorial control. It is best suited for matches where River can pin an opponent in their own half and use midfield dominance to dictate the tempo.
