Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Raya (Kepa) · Timber (White) · Saliba (Mosquera) · Gabriel (Kiwior) · MLS (Calafiori) · Zubimendi (Norgaard) · Rice (Merino) · Odegaard (Nwaneri / Dowman) · Saka (Madueke) · Havertz (Gyokeres) · Arsenal play a game built on high pressing and quick transitions in a 5-2-3. This formation allows the team to squeeze the space in the opponent half and create immediate pressure when the ball is lost. By using a wide attacking line, Arsenal can stretch the pitch and force the opposition to defend large areas of grass.
Raya acts as the last line of defense, playing out from the back to start attacks. The defensive unit uses a back five that can shift effectively to cover the width of the pitch. Zubimendi sits in the center of the three, acting as a ball playing defender who can step up to intercept passes. Saliba and Gabriel form the core of the defense, with Saliba providing immense recovery speed and Gabriel using his aerial strength to win headers. Timber works as a right wing back to provide width, while MLS operates on the left to push up the flank. This unit can drop into a low block or push high to set the offside trap.
The midfield relies on a two man pairing that needs to cover huge distances. Rice operates as the engine in the middle, often dropping deep to shield the defense and win the second ball. Odegaard plays as the creative spark, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to find the attackers. These two must work hard to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing between them. When defending, they sit in a mid-block to deny the turn to the opponent's midfielders.
In the final third, the attack uses three players to pin the last defender. Havertz acts as a pressing centre-forward, using his physical presence to hold up the ball and link play. Saka stays wide on the right to isolate defenders in one on one situations, often cutting inside to create shooting lanes. The left winger provides additional width and can make runs in behind to stretch the defense. The team looks to attack in combinations, using quick passes to split the defense with a through ball.
One major advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press. The five man defense also offers compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the center. This formation allows the wing backs to overlap the winger, creating wide overloads that force the opposition to shift constantly.
This lineup is a heavy pressing system designed to dominate games through territorial control. It is best suited for facing teams that try to build play slowly from the back.
