Ajax Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Wijndal · Brobbey · Godts · Gloukh · Berghuis · Taylor · Klaassen · Gaaei · Sutalo · Baas · JarosAjax aims to dominate matches through high pressing and heavy verticality in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm opponents by pushing numbers forward and winning the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The intent is to squeeze the space and use a high line to compress the pitch, making it difficult for the opponent to build play from their own half.
Jaros sits between the posts as the goalkeeper, acting as the first point of distribution. Ahead of him, Sutalo and Baas operate as two central defenders in a high line. They must be ready to step up and defend space behind them or cover if the opposition tries to hit in behind on the transition. Because there are no full backs, these two central defenders must be comfortable playing out from the back and remain vigilant to prevent long balls from bypassing the midfield.
The midfield is a heavy five man unit that controls the central areas and the flanks. Gaaei and Wijndal act as a double pivot to shield the defense, with Gaaei often tasked to carry the ball forward. Klaassen and Taylor occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with Klaassen looking to arrive late into the box to provide a goal threat. Gloukh plays as an attacking ten, operating in the hole behind the striker to find the feet of the forwards and create chances.
Ajax utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Brobbey acts as the central striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the wings, Berghuis and Godts act as wide attackers who can either cut inside to combine in tight spaces or spread wide to cross. These three forwards are expected to press from the front, forcing the opposition into mistakes and allowing the team to win the ball back high up the pitch.
This formation offers Ajax a massive numerical superiority in the middle of the park, making it very difficult for opponents to keep possession. The team also benefits from a high intensity press that can trigger turnovers in dangerous areas. By using the five midfielders to control the tempo, the club can quickly switch play to isolate Berghuis or Godts in one on one situations against the opposing full backs.
The 2-5-3 is a high risk, high reward formation designed for total dominance and aggressive pressing. It is best suited for games where Ajax faces a team that struggles to play under pressure and allows for dominance in the middle third.
