Starting Lineup

Peñarol relies on a direct and vertical identity with a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to play with high intensity and quick transitions. The team looks to win the ball in the middle of the pitch and move it forward immediately to catch the opposition off guard.

Campaña starts between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a flat back four where Milans acts as a defensive wing back on the right side to cover the flank. Olivera provides width on the left, while Herrera and Gularte operate as the central defenders. Herrera and Gularte stay compact to defend zonally and win the second ball, often stepping up to squeeze the space between the lines.

A four man midfield provides the engine for Peñarol. Trindade acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and disrupt the play of the opposition. Beside him, Sosa and Cabrera operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Leo plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to find the feet of the forwards or carry the ball forward into the final third. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and ensure they do not get bypassed by direct passes.

The attacking front line utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. Arezo and Maxi work together to pin the last defender and create runs in behind. Maxi often plays as a pressing centre forward to trigger a press from the front, while Arezo looks to hold up the ball and lay it off to the incoming runners. The team uses the wide players to spread wide, creating space in the center for Leo to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage for Peñarol is their ability to press in a mid-block and force a long ball from the opponent. They can also create wide overloads when Milans and Olivera push up to support the midfield. The speed of transition between the midfield and the two forwards allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opposition can settle.
