Mike Maignan operates between the posts to organize the defensive line. The defense consists of a back three with Luka Modric, Tomori, and G. Leoni. Tomori and G. Leoni act as central defenders who must defend zonally and cover space when teammates push up. Luka Modric provides experience in the middle of the back three to help play out from the back. The wide defenders, Estupinian as the LWB and Jimenez as the RWB, provide immense width and are expected to push high to support the attack. In the middle of the pitch, Milan utilizes a two man midfield. Youssouf Fofana and Loftus-cheek act as the engine room to control the center. Youssouf Fofana works to shield the defense and win the second ball, while Loftus-cheek uses his strength to carry the ball forward. This pair must connect the defensive unit to the front three. They are responsible for pressing in a mid-block to force the opposition into errors and then quickly finding the attackers to start a break.

The attacking front three features Rafa Leao on the left and Pulisic on the right. Both players act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. Rafa Leao uses his dribbling style and explosive pace to beat defenders on the flank. Dusan Vlahovic leads the line as a pressing centre-forward. He works to pin the last defender and hold up the ball to allow the wingers to join the play. The team builds attacks by using the width from Estupinian and Jimenez to create space for the forwards to move into the box.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through wide overloads. When Jimenez and Pulisic operate on the same side, they can overwhelm the opposition fullback. Milan also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press that the midfield can then join. This creates a compact unit that is very difficult to play through.

AC Milan uses this 5-2-3 to dominate transitions and exploit wide spaces. It is a setup best suited for facing teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
