River Football Formation
Starting Lineup
ARMANI · MARTINEZ (QUARTA) · PAULO (DIAZ) · MONTIEL · ACUÑA · ENZO (PÉREZ) · CASTAÑO · GALARZA · SALAS · COLIDIO · DRIUSSIFocusing on defensive solidity and quick transitions, River utilizes a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to maintain compactness and use wide areas to stretch the opposition. By keeping a large number of players behind the ball, the team can wait for the right moment to hit in behind on the transition.
Armani operates as the goalkeeper, acting as the last line of defense. The back five consists of a central trio and two wide defenders. Enzo sits in the middle of the defense to command the zone and protect the center. Paulo and Martinez act as the left and right central defenders to cover space and intercept passes. On the flanks, Acuña and Montiel act as attacking wing backs. Acuña pushes up to provide width on the left, while Montiel overlaps on the right to support the attack. This unit stays compact to defend zonally and limit space between the lines.
The midfield relies on a two-man pairing of Castaño and Galarza. This duo works to control the center of the pitch and link the defense to the attack. Castaño plays a more defensive role to shield the defense and win the second ball. Galarza acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and progress through the thirds. Together, they must press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opponent and recycle possession quickly when they win it back.
Up front, River uses three attackers to pin the opposition back line. Driussi acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Colidio and Salas occupy the wide areas as wingers. Colidio looks to cut inside from the left to create space, while Salas stretches the defence from the right. These three press from the front to trigger a press and force mistakes. The team looks to play through the lines to find the forwards in attacking positions.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads. When Acuña and Montiel push high, they create extra passing options alongside the wingers. Another strength is the compactness when defending. With five defenders and two midfielders, the team can easily drop into a low block to deny the turn of attacking players. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
The 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive security and attacking width. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where River can sit deep and break quickly.
