Guimarães acts as the primary pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession, while Tonali drives forward with the ball to connect the lines. On the flanks, L. Hall and Livramento operate as wing backs to provide width. L. Hall pushes high to support the left side, while Livramento covers the right to help the defensive block. This midfield unit is designed to press aggressively and win the second ball.

The attacking front line uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Sesko acts as the lone striker, working to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Gordon plays as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and run in behind. Barnes occupies the right wing to provide width and whip it in toward the box. These three forwards press from the front to trigger a press and force the opposition into mistakes in their own half.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when L. Hall and Gordon combine on the left. The team also finds success through speed of transition, using the quick movements of Gordon and Barnes to hit in behind on the transition. By having B. Guimarães and Tonali control the middle, Newcastle can maintain compactness when defending while remaining ready to break quickly.
