Maignan guards the goal and helps organize the back line. The defensive unit consists of a back three with Thiaw, Pavlovic, and G. Leoni. Thiaw acts as a central defender who is strong in the air, while Pavlovic and G. Leoni cover the left and right sides of the central zone. This unit is designed to stay compact and shift as a block to cover gaps when the midfield pushes high.

The midfield is the engine of Milan and operates as a dense five man unit. Estupinian and Saelemakers form a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Luka Modric sits slightly higher to receive on the half-turn and use his exceptional passing range to switch play. Ardon Jashari and Youssouf Fofana occupy the central spaces to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive third to the attack. This heavy presence in the middle allows the team to recycle possession and control the tempo.

Rafa Leao plays as an attacking ten in the hole to support the lone striker. He operates in the space between the opposition midfield and defense to create chances. D. Vlahovic leads the line as a pressing centre-forward who works to pin the last defender and hold up the ball. The attacking movement relies on Rafa Leao finding pockets of space to slide through balls to Vlahovic, who can then turn or play a one-two to attack the goal.

This formation provides significant numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. The heavy presence of five midfielders makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center. Milan can also use the ability to press in a mid-block to force long balls. The wide areas are often left to be covered by the lateral defenders in the back three, but the central density makes it hard for teams to find passing lanes.
