They connect the defensive line to the rest of the team by playing short from the back and finding the feet of the forward. LM and RM provide width by stretching the defence and pressing the opposition full backs. CM plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to link play and arrive late into the box to support the attack.

In the final third, Man Utd utilizes a lone striker, ST, to lead the line. ST acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball to allow the midfield to move up. The attack is built through the wide players, LM and RM, who look to drive forward or play one-two combinations with the attacking midfielder. This system creates runs in behind and looks to isolate wide players in one on one situations during the break.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to disrupt the opponent's build up.
