Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
UNAI SIMON · MARTINEZ · VIVIAN · BERCHICHE · GOROSABEL · JAUREGIZAR · PRADOS DIAZ · GURUZETA · SANCET · WILLIAMS · WILLIAMSAthletic operates with a high intensity, vertical style of football using a 4-2-4 formation. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and move forward with immense speed. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition by committing a large number of players into the final third.
Unai Simon stays between the posts to organize the defense and command his area. The defensive unit functions as a flat back four with Gorosabel and Berchiche as the wide defenders. Gorosabel and Berchiche can overlap the winger to provide width during attacks. In the center, Vivian and Martinez act as the primary defenders. This pairing must remain strong in the air and be ready to cover space if the high line is breached. All players in the back line must work as a single unit to hold the line and ensure the offside trap is set correctly when the team presses.
Jauregizar and Prados Diaz form a double pivot in the middle of the pitch. These two players sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and win the second ball. They must be able to carry the ball forward to help progress through the thirds and act as the vital link between the defense and the four attackers. When defending, they must squeeze the space in the middle to prevent opponents from playing through the lines and must be ready to intercept passes.
Four attackers make up the front line to press from the front. Williams on the left and Williams on the right provide extreme width and pace. These wingers aim to get to the byline or cut inside to challenge the defense centrally. Sancet and Guruzeta act as the two central forwards. They work together to hold up the ball and lay it off to the oncoming runners. This duo also looks to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opposition defense out of position.
Several tactical advantages exist in this 4-2-4 formation for Athletic Club. The presence of four attackers allows for immediate pressure on the opposition back line, which can force a long ball. Wide overloads are also created when Gorosabel and Berchiche push forward to support the wingers. Furthermore, the speed of transition is a massive asset as the team can move from a mid-block to an attacking position in seconds.
This formation is designed for aggressive, direct football that looks to punish opponents quickly. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to chase a goal or exploit a slow-moving defensive line.
