The midfield consists of a double pivot with S. Effenberg and B. Schweinsteiger. B. Schweinsteiger works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while S. Effenberg provides a physical presence to win the second ball. These two players are tasked to shield the defense and also drive forward when the team enters the final third. They must be ready to recycle possession or immediately look to hit in behind on the transition.

Rummenigge operates from the left as an inverted winger who wants to cut inside to goal. A. Robben occupies the right side, using his dribbling style to isolate a one on one wide.
