Radlinger sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of just two central defenders, Dragovic and Wiesinger, who must remain very disciplined. Dragovic and Wiesinger act as the primary cover, often playing a high line to stay close to the midfield. Because there are only two defenders, they must be able to cover large spaces and step up to catch attackers offside or intercept long balls.

The midfield is the engine room of the Austria Wien lineup, operating with five players to control the center. Ranftl and Guenouche act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and win the second ball. Tae-Seok Lee and Fischer occupy the central spaces to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. Fitz plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space and play through the lines. This five man block allows the team to control the tempo and recycle possession easily.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. J. Eggestein operates as a lone striker, working to hold up the ball and find teammates. On the wings, Botic and Sarkaria act as wide attackers who can pull wide to create width or cut inside to attack the box. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the midfielders like Fitz to arrive late into the box. The front three press the opposition back line constantly to force errors.

This formation provides significant numerical superiority in the midfield, making it difficult for opponents to play through the center. The wide players combined with the attacking midfielders allow for quick transitions and the ability to overwhelm the defense in combination. By packing the middle, the team can also win the ball back quickly and launch direct attacks.
