Starting Lineup

Navas · Nathan · Duarte · Azuaje · Angulo · Monroy · Trigos · Ruvalcaba · Carrasquilla · Vite · Refuerzo

Pumas want to control the game through total control of the center of the pitch. They use a 3-6-1 formation to overwhelm the opposition in the middle third. This lineup is built to press high and win the ball back quickly to keep the game in the opponent half.

Navas plays in goal to anchor the defensive unit. The back three consists of Azuaje, Duarte, and Nathan. Duarte sits in the middle as the central defender to organize the line and win the header. Azuaje and Nathan act as the wide center backs, ready to cover the wide areas when the team pushes up. They play a high line to squeeze the space and force the opposition into long balls.

The midfield is the heart of this Pumas lineup. A deep trio of Angulo, Trigos, and Monroy sits in front of the defense to shield the back line and win the second ball. They provide a screen to stop any direct attacks. Ahead of them, Carrasquilla, Ruvalcaba, and Vite operate in the half-spaces. Carrasquilla and Ruvalcaba look to carry the ball forward and find the feet of the striker, while Vite makes runs into the box to support the attack. This layer of six players allows the team to recycle possession effectively.

Refuerzo acts as the lone striker in the attacking third. He works to hold up the ball and pin the last defender to create room for the players behind him. The three attacking midfielders, Carrasquilla, Ruvalcaba, and Vite, play as a second line of attack. They combine in tight spaces to play through the lines. When the team transitions, the goal is to get the ball to Refuerzo quickly or have the midfielders arrive late into the box to finish moves.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By packing the middle, the team can easily win the second ball and control the tempo. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves because the massive midfield block can quickly squeeze the space. This makes it very hard for the opponent to play out from the back.

The 3-6-1 is a heavy, central-focused formation designed for dominance. It is best suited for games where the team wants to suffocate an opponent that struggles to handle a high press.
