Milan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Vlahovic (Santiago Gimenez) · Rafa Leao (Pulisic) · Saelemakers (Athekame) · Estupinian (Jimenez) · Luka Modric (Samuele Ricci) · Ardon Jashari (Loftus-cheek) · Youssouf Fofana (H. Nicolussi) · Pavlovic (Bartesaghi) · Tomori (Gabbia) · G. Leoni · Maignan (Terracciano)Milan relies on a heavy attacking presence to overwhelm opponents using a 3-3-4 formation. This lineup is built to play with high verticality and constant pressure in the final third. The goal is to flood the attacking zones and use multiple forwards to pin the opposition back, making it a very aggressive system for Milan.
Maignan acts as the last line of defense, often playing a sweeping role when the team pushes up. The back three consists of Tomori, G. Leoni, and Pavlovic. Tomori operates as the right centre-back, providing aerial strength and speed to cover wide areas. Pavlovic and G. Leoni form the rest of the defensive line, tasked with defending zonally and winning the second ball. This back three must hold the line while the midfield pushes forward.
The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a single pivot. Luka Modric sits in the deep lying playmaker role, using his passing range to recycle possession and find the attackers. Ardon Jashari and Youssouf Fofana operate as the two central midfielders. Fofana is tasked to carry the ball forward and press aggressively, while Jashari helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This trio works to win it back high up the pitch to sustain the pressure.
In the attacking phase, the team employs four forwards to stretch the defence. Estupinian plays as a wide winger on the left, while Saelemakers occupies the right side to provide width. Rafa Leao and Vlahovic lead the line as a central partnership. Leao tends to cut inside to use his dribbling style, whereas Vlahovic acts as a physical presence to win headers and hold up the ball. These four forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the four forwards to squeeze the space. The midfield trio of Modric, Jashari, and Fofana can create numerical superiority in the center during transitions. This setup also allows for quick attacks where the team can hit in behind on the transition with the pace of Leao and the strength of Vlahovic.
This aggressive 3-3-4 formation is designed for teams that want to dominate the ball and attack constantly. It is best suited for games against opponents who sit deep and struggle to deal with high pressure in their own box.
