Starting Lineup
K.Schmeichel · K.Tierney · A.Johnston · C.Carter-Vickers · A.Trusty · C.McGregor · L.McCowan · R.Hatate · D.Maeda · B.Nygren · A.IdahCeltic aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup relies on aggressive transitions and a high line to squeeze the space in the opponent's half. The team is built to press from the front and use wide players to stretch the defence during attacks.
Kasper Schmeichel plays behind a back five that can shift to protect the central area. Cameron McGregor leads the central defence as a dominant presence in the air and a leader of the unit. Alongside him, Carter-Vickers acts as a ball playing defender on the right, while Trusty covers the left side of the central block. The wide roles fall to attacking wing backs, with Alexander Johnston pushing up the right flank and Kieran Tierney providing width and delivery from the left. This defensive unit works together to hold the line and cover the spaces left behind when the wing backs push forward.
The midfield operates as a two man engine room. Reo Hatate and McCowan act as the central duo, with Hatate known for his ability to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces. They must work hard to compress the midfield and ensure they do not get bypassed. These two players connect the back five to the front three, often having to track back to help the defensive unit when the opposition breaks. Their job is to win the second ball and immediately look to pass through the lines to the attackers.
Celtic utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender and create chaos. Daizen Maeda acts as a pressing centre-forward, using his high intensity to force mistakes from the opposition back line. Beside him, B.Nygren plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, while Maeda occupies the left. Adam Idah serves as the target man, looking to hold up the ball and provide a focal point for crosses. This front line creates movements such as runs in behind and allows the wing backs to overlap the winger to deliver crosses into the box.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. The width provided by Johnston and Tierney creates wide overloads that force the opposition to shift constantly. Furthermore, the presence of three attackers allows Celtic to pin the opposition back and secure control of the final third during sustained periods of possession.
This 5-2-3 formation is designed for a high pressing, transition based game. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to exploit a high defensive line and win the ball back quickly in the opponent's half.
