Real Sociedad looks to play a high intensity game designed to overwhelm the opposition with a vertical 4-2-4. This formation is built to press from the front and quickly hit in behind on the transition. The goal is to create chaos in the opposition half by using a heavy attacking presence that forces the opponent to defend deep and under constant pressure.

Arconada stands between the posts to guard the goal as the defensive unit works behind him. The back line operates as a flat back four with Rekarte on the right and Agustín Aranzábal on the left to provide width. Gorriz and Larrañaga act as the central defenders, where they must stay compact and defend zonally to manage the space between the lines. This back four must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or drop into a low block if the high press is bypassed.

The midfield operates with a double pivot to provide a shield for the back four. Xabi Alonso sits in the middle to control the tempo and recycle possession, while Jesús Zamora works to cover ground and press in a mid-block to win the ball back. These two players connect the defensive line to the front four, with Xabi Alonso looking to play through the lines to find the attackers. They must work hard to deny the pivot of the opposition and stop any direct play through the center.

Real Sociedad utilizes two forwards in a partnership with Kovačević and Satrústegui acting as the central strike force. They work to pin the last defender and win the second ball when the ball is played into the channel. On the flanks, Ufarte and Xabi Prieto act as wide wingers who pull wide to stretch the defence. They look to receive the ball in space and either cut inside or deliver early crosses to the two central strikers.

A major tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves from the front line. By having four players close to the opposition defense, Real Sociedad can trigger a press easily and win it back high up the pitch. This setup also allows for wide overloads when the wingers and full backs combine to create numbers on the flanks. The speed of transition is high, as the team can move from a defensive block to an attacking wave very quickly.

This 4-2-4 formation is designed to punish teams that struggle to play out from the back. It is most effective when playing against opponents who leave large gaps between their midfield and defensive lines.
