Milan aims to control games through a high press and aggressive verticality in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on squeezing the pitch to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately attacking the opposition. The setup relies on a heavy presence in the middle of the park to dominate play and create chances through quick transitions.

Maignan acts as a sweeper keeper behind a very high defensive line. The back line consists of only two central defenders, Tomori and Pavlovic, who must be prepared to step up and catch opponents offside or cover large spaces if the press is bypassed. Tomori uses his speed to cover ground while Pavlovic provides strength in the air. Because the formation uses only two defenders, the unit must act with high coordination to prevent runners from getting behind them.

A five man midfield provides the core of the Milan system. Estupiñán and Jiménez operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Bennacer and Ricci occupy the central spaces to control the tempo and connect the defense to the attack. Bennacer uses his ability to find pockets of space to link play, while Ricci works to win the second ball and drive the team forward. Pulisic plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, acting as a creative hub to play through the lines and find the forwards.

The attacking front three focuses on stretching the defense and creating chaos. Leão plays as a wide winger on the left, using his dribbling style to beat defenders and drive toward the goal. Saelemaekers stays wide on the right to provide width and deliver crosses. Giménez operates as a lone striker, acting as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition build up. The goal is to use the movements of Leão and Saelemaekers to create space for Giménez to find the feet of the striker or for Pulisic to arrive late into the box.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the middle, Milan can easily win the second ball and control the tempo of the game. The high line and the presence of Pulisic allow for immediate pressure once the ball is won, enabling the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can recover.

Milan uses this high risk high reward system to overwhelm opponents in the middle third. It is a formation best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and break down a low block.
