Roma aims to be defensively solid and quick on the transition, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a compact block and wait for the right moment to strike, using the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The goal is to maintain a hard to beat unit while having enough numbers in the final third to punish errors.

Svilar stands between the posts to command his area. In front of him, a back five provides a heavy presence, led by Mancini who acts as the central anchor to win the header and clear the lines. Hermoso or Ghilardi occupy the right side of the defense, while Ndicka or Ziolkowski take the left side to provide cover. The wing backs, Angelinho or Salah E. on the left and Wesley, Celik, or Rensch on the right, are tasked to push up and provide width. This defensive unit functions by staying narrow to protect the middle, forcing opponents to the flanks where they can be contained.

The midfield operates as a double pivot to maintain control and protect the central area. El Aynaoui or Cristante works to shield the defense, often dropping to help the back line if needed. Konè, Pellegrini, or Pisilli act as the drivers to carry the ball forward and link the defense to the attack. These two players must work hard to press in a mid-block and win the second ball to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. They provide the necessary connection to move the ball from the deep areas into the dangerous attacking zones.

Roma employs three attackers across the front to create immediate pressure. Dovbyk or Ferguson acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and provide a central target. On the wings, Soulè, Dybala, or Baldanzi look to cut inside from the right, while ElShaarawi operates on the left to stretch the defense. This front line is designed to press from the front, forcing long balls and creating opportunities for runs in behind. The attackers combine in tight spaces to move the ball quickly toward the goal, often looking for cutbacks from the byline.

This formation offers significant advantages through its defensive compactness and width. By using five defenders, Roma creates a heavy block that is difficult to break down in central areas. The use of attacking wing backs allows for wide overloads, which helps to pull the opposing defense apart. This setup also allows for high speed of transition, as the team can move from a deep block to a direct attack in seconds.

The 5-2-3 lineup provides a reliable way to stay compact while remaining dangerous on the break. It is a setup best suited for facing dominant teams that control much of the ball.
