Athletic focuses on a high intensity and vertical style of play through a 4-2-4 formation. The lineup is designed to push the opposition back and win the ball back high up the pitch. This is a direct way to play, using width and numbers in the attacking third to force errors and create chances through quick ball movement.

Unai Simón sits in goal to command his area and start attacks. The defensive unit works as a flat back four with Yuri on the left and Areso on the right. Laporte and Vivian form the central pair, where Laporte acts as a ball playing defender to distribute the ball. Vivian is tasked to win the header and cover the space behind the full backs. The defenders work to hold the line and squeeze the space as a unit to keep the team compact and difficult to break down.

The midfield is built around a double pivot consisting of de Galarreta and Jauregizar. These two must work hard to shield the defence and protect the central areas. de Galarreta looks to recycle possession and play through the lines to find the forwards. Jauregizar focuses on winning the second ball and pressing in a mid block to disrupt the opposition. This pair acts as the engine to connect the defensive unit to the front four during transitions.

The attacking front four provides the main goal threat. Nico and Iñaki act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the defence. They look to cut inside and find space in the half spaces or whip it in to the central attackers. Sancet and Maroan lead the line as two forwards in a partnership. Sancet can drop into the hole to link up play, while Maroan works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and isolations for the wingers.

One major strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball in dangerous areas. By using four attackers, Athletic can create wide overloads and isolate wide players in one on one situations. The speed of transition allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can recover and get organized.

This 4-2-4 formation relies on heavy pressing and rapid attacking movements. It is best suited for matches where Athletic faces a team that sits deep and requires constant pressure to break down.
