Starting Lineup

Cruz Azul focuses on high pressing and rapid transitions through a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use the width of the field to stretch the opposition defense. The team aims to control the tempo by using their midfielders to bridge the gap between the defensive unit and the front three.

In goal, MIER acts as the primary shot stopper. The defensive line consists of a back three featuring CHIQUETE as the central defender, with PIOVI on the left and DITTA on the right. CHIQUETE holds the line and directs the unit, while PIOVI and DITTA act as wide centre-backs to cover the channels. This back three provides a solid base to play out from the back and allows the team to remain compact when sitting deep in a mid-block.

The midfield operates with a central pairing of LIRA and RODRÍGUEZ. RODRÍGUEZ and LIRA act as the engine room, with one often dropping to shield the defense while the other looks to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. They are supported by wide midfielders ROTONDI and RIVERO, who act as attacking wing backs to provide constant width. The attacking front line uses three players to pin the opposition back. SEPÚLVEDA leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. On the flanks, PARADELA and BOGUSZ operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring chances. This movement creates space for ROTONDI and RIVERO to overlap the winger and deliver crosses into the box, creating varied ways to break the line of the defense.
