Orlando Pirates look to play a high press and quick transition game to catch opponents off guard. This 4-5-1 formation is built to control the central areas of the pitch and win the ball back high up the pitch. By using a large midfield block, they aim to squeeze the space and force errors from the opposition while remaining ready to break quickly.

Sipho acts as the last line of defense in goal. The team uses a flat back four to hold the line and maintain a compact unit. Deon and Deano play as wide defenders who must track back to defend the flanks and prevent crosses. Mbekezeli and Nkosinathi act as the central defenders, with Mbekezeli providing aerial strength to win the header and Nkosinathi acting to cover the space if the line is breached. They defend zonally to ensure no gaps open up between the players.

The midfield is organized as a five man unit with a double pivot. Sihle and Thalente sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and intercept passes. In front of them, Patrick, Kamogelo, and Relebogile work to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Relebogile and Kamogelo drive forward to support the attack, while Patrick works to recycle possession and win the second ball. This group can press in a mid block to deny the turn of the opposition midfielders.

In the attacking phase, Tshegofatso operates as a lone striker. He focuses on holding the ball up to wait for support or making runs in behind to stretch the defense. The wide players, Kamogelo and Relebogile, push higher to provide width and pull the opposition defenders wide. They look to deliver early crosses or cut inside to create space in the box. Tshegofatso must press from the front to disrupt the opposition as they play out from the back.

A major advantage for Orlando Pirates is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to dominate the center of the pitch. They also offer great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. This allows the team to shift quickly from a mid block into a fast break once they win possession back high up the pitch.

This 4-5-1 formation focuses on defensive stability and quick verticality. It is most effective when playing against teams that like to play short from the back and can be caught on the transition.
