Sundowns aim to dominate through high intensity pressing and rapid verticality with a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition before they can settle. The team uses the extra defenders to build stability while looking to strike quickly when the chance arises.

Williams sits between the posts to organize the back line as the unit maintains a high line. A back three consisting of Kekana, Cupido, and Mokoena provides a solid foundation where Mokoena acts as the central anchor. Kekana and Cupido cover the channels to ensure the defense stays compact. Modiba and Mudau operate as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and support the wingers. This system relies on the center backs to win the second ball and play out from the back to start attacks.

The midfield operates as a double pivot to control the center of the park. Allende works to press aggressively to win the ball high and disrupt the opponent. Zwane acts as the playmaker who connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball and looking to play through the lines. These two midfielders must work hard to cover the space left behind the wing backs and ensure the team maintains its balance. Allende and Zwane combine to recycle possession and switch play to the wide areas.

Sundowns use three attackers to pin the last defender and stretch the defense. Rayners plays as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and hold up the ball for his teammates. Matthews operates as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to create goalscoring chances in the half-spaces. Sales stays wide on the right to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. This front three works in combinations to create runs in behind or allow the wing backs to overlap the winger.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves with the front three and the wing backs. The back three of Kekana, Cupido, and Mokoena provides compactness when defending against long balls or central runs. Sundowns also benefit from wide overloads when Modiba and Mudau push forward to join the attackers. This creates a numerical superiority in the final third that is difficult to mark.

The 5-2-3 formation allows Sundowns to transition from a solid defensive block to a lethal attacking unit. It is best suited for games where the team needs to squeeze the space and exploit a high defensive line.
