Milan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
R. HØJLUND · RAFAEL LEÁO · C. PULISIC · S. RICCI · JASHARI · ESTUPINAN · DE WINTER · PAVLOVIC · TOMORI · SAELEMAEKERS · MAIGNANMilan aims to control the pitch through heavy central presence and aggressive ball winning in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately transition into dangerous attacking movements. By using a very narrow defensive base, the team forces opponents into wide areas where they can easily squeeze the space.
MAIGNAN operates behind a very high line to act as a sweeper when the team pushes up. The two central defenders, TOMORI and PAVLOVIC, must stay narrow to defend the central corridor. TOMORI uses his recovery speed to cover the space behind while PAVLOVIC uses his aerial strength to win the second ball. This defensive unit functions by staying compact and stepping up together to catch opponents offside.
The midfield acts as a heavy engine room consisting of a three man midfield with a carrier and two players in the half spaces. S. RICCI plays as the deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and protect the two defenders. DE WINTER and ESTUPINAN operate in the central areas to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. JASHARI and SAELEMAEKERS push into the advanced positions to create numerical superiority in the middle. This group works to press in a mid block or trigger a press when the ball enters their zone.
In the final third, Milan uses three attackers to stretch the defence. RAFAEL LEÁO and C. PULISIC act as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal, while R. HØJLUND serves as the pressing centre forward to pin the last defender. The wingers look to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. The team builds play through the middle to create combinations in tight spaces before looking to whip it in for the striker.
This formation provides significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By packing the middle with JASHARI and SAELEMAEKERS, Milan creates numerical superiority in midfield that makes it hard for opponents to play through the lines. The narrowness of the formation also allows for quick transitions once the ball is won in the central zones.
Milan uses this aggressive lineup to dominate possession and suffocate opponents in their own half. It is a formation best suited for games where the team wants to exploit a high defensive line through speed and central overloading.
