Monaco Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Biereth · Ansu Fati · Golovin · Akliouche · Pogba · Zakaria · C. Henrique · Vanderson · Dier · Singo · KöhnMonaco plays with a very vertical and aggressive identity using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in their own half through constant pressure and rapid movement. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and use a heavy midfield presence to control the center of the field. By playing with so many players in the middle, the team can quickly transition from defense to attack.
Köhn stays between the posts to act as the goalkeeper. The defensive unit sits very high with a narrow back two composed of Dier and Singo. Dier acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while Singo uses his strength to win the header and cover for his partner. Because there are only two central defenders, the unit must defend zonally and be ready to set the offside trap to prevent being hit in behind.
The midfield consists of a five man block designed to dominate the center. Vanderson and C. Henrique work as a deep lying playmaker pairing to shield the defense and recycle possession. Zakaria uses his engine to carry the ball forward and connect the lines, while Pogba uses his impressive passing range and physicality to dictate play from the center. Golovin operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to play through the lines and find pockets of space.
Monaco uses three attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. Biereth acts as a pressing centre forward to force the opposition into mistakes, while Ansu Fati plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances. Akliouche stays wide on the right to provide width and can whip it in or cut it back for runners. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This lineup offers massive numerical superiority in midfield to win the second ball. The presence of five players allows the team to compress the midfield and make it difficult for opponents to pass through the center. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press. This allows the team to win it back high up the pitch and strike quickly through the lines.
The 2-5-3 formation provides a heavy attacking presence that can overwhelm most defenses. It is best suited for matches where Monaco needs to dominate possession and break down a team that sits deep.
