São Paulo Football Formation
Starting Lineup
YOUNG · MAIK · ALAN FRANCO · SABINO · PATRYCK · LUAN · PABLO MAIA · RODRIGUINHO · FERREIRA · TAPIA · DINENNOSão Paulo aims to dominate games through heavy central congestion and quick verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to suffocate the middle of the pitch and force opponents into wide areas where the team can regain possession. The intention is to use a massive midfield presence to control the tempo and quickly move the ball to the front three.
In goal, YOUNG acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit relies on a central pair of Alan Franco and Sabino who must operate as ball playing defenders in a high line. Since there are only two central defenders, Alan Franco and Sabino must stay compact and communicate constantly to cover the space behind them. They focus on winning the second ball and intercepting passes before the opposition can reach the penalty area.
The midfield is the engine of the São Paulo system, utilizing a five man unit to control the game. Patryck and Maik form a double pivot to shield the two center backs and disrupt opposition play. In front of them, Luan and Pablo Maia occupy the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack, while Rodriguinho plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to create chances. This midfield block is designed to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly recycle possession through the middle.
The attacking front line uses three players to stretch the opposition defense. Dinenno acts as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and provide a focal point for the attack. On the flanks, Ferreira and Tapia work as wide wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring opportunities. This trio works in combinations to create runs in behind the opposition back line, often looking for quick through balls to exploit gaps in the defense.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages, specifically the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the center, São Paulo can easily bypass the midfield of most opponents. The presence of Rodriguinho and the two central midfielders also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for the opponent to play out from the back.
This 2-5-3 lineup is designed for high intensity games where controlling the ball in central areas is the priority. It is best suited for facing teams that try to play through the middle and lack the pace to exploit the space behind the two center backs.
