Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Raya · Gabriel · Saliba · Timber · MLS · Zubimendi · Rice · Martinelli · Ødegaard · Saka · GyökeresArsenal plays with a heavy emphasis on high pressing and direct verticality in a 4-2-4. This formation is built to pin the opposition back and hunt for the ball high up the pitch. By pushing many players forward, the Gunners look to win the ball in advanced areas and strike before the opponent can settle.
Raya operates between the posts as the goalkeeper to start the build up. The defensive unit sits in a high line with Saliba and Gabriel acting as the central pairing. Saliba uses his recovery pace and reading of the game to cover the space behind while Gabriel provides aerial strength. Timber plays as the right back and is tasked to overlap or tuck in, while MLS operates on the left. The back four must defend zonally to maintain a compact block when the team is forced to sit deep.
The midfield works as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Zubimendi acts as a deep lying playmaker to help recycle possession and move the ball between the lines. Beside him, Rice provides the physical presence to win the second ball and drive the team forward. This pair must be disciplined to protect the center of the formation when the team loses possession. Rice often carries the ball forward to link the defensive unit with the aggressive front four.
Arsenal uses four attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Saka stays wide on the right to isolate defenders and deliver crosses, while Martinelli plays on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to find goal scoring opportunities. Gyökeres acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. Ødegaard plays in a more advanced role as a second striker in the hole, looking to receive on the half turn and play through the lines to find the runners.
This lineup offers significant attacking threat through wide overloads and rapid transitions. By committing four players to the final third, Arsenal can quickly isolate Saka or Martinelli in one on one situations. The combination of a strong double pivot and a high pressing front line allows the team to squeeze the space and win the ball back high up the pitch.
This 4-2-4 formation is designed for total dominance and aggressive attacking play. It is best suited for games where Arsenal needs to break down a low block or overwhelm an opponent through sheer volume of pressure.
