Ajax Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Wijndal · Brobbey · Godts · Gloukh · Berghuis · Taylor · Klaassen · Gaaei · Sutalo · Itakura · JarosAjax aims to dominate the pitch through a heavy high press and rapid verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the opposition half and win the ball back high up the pitch. By pushing players forward, the team looks to overwhelm the opponent through central density and quick transitions.
Jaros starts between the posts to manage the space behind the defensive line. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Sutalo and Itakura, who must stay high to squeeze the play. These two act as ball playing defenders, ready to play short from the back or hit in behind the opposition. Because of the lack of full backs, Sutalo and Itakura must be careful to cover the wide areas if the opponent hits in behind on the transition.
The midfield unit is the engine of this Ajax lineup, acting as a massive five man block. Gaaei and Wijndal operate as a double pivot to shield the two centre backs and win the second ball. Klaassen and Taylor work as inverted eights to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with Klaassen looking to arrive late into the box to support the attack. Gloukh plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines to create chances.
In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Brobbey plays as a pressing centre forward, using his strength to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the flanks, Berghuis and Godts act as wide wingers who stay high to provide width. Berghuis often looks to cut inside to create space for the midfield, while Godts aims to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. The movement of Brobbey allows the midfielders to run into the space he creates.
This formation offers a massive numerical superiority in midfield, making it difficult for opponents to play through the centre. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows the team to win the ball back quickly and attack before the opposition can get organised. The width provided by Berghuis and Godts ensures that the team can also switch play to find isolated one on one situations against full backs.
Ajax uses this aggressive lineup to suffocate teams that try to build slowly from the back. It is a high risk and high reward formation best suited for matches where total dominance and immediate pressure are required.
