Starting Lineup

Calafiori · Timber · G. Magalhães · Saliba · Trossard · Ødegaard · Gyökeres · Havertz · Rice · Zubimendi · Raya

Arsenal play with a heavy focus on controlling the center of the pitch and winning the ball back high up the pitch using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle thirds and use a high line to squeeze the space in the opposition half. The goal is to create constant pressure and use ball retention to move the opposition out of position.

Raya operates as the last line of defense, often playing short from the back to start the build up. The back line consists of a back two featuring Saliba and G. Magalhães. Saliba uses his recovery pace and strength to cover space behind while G. Magalhães wins the header in duels. These two central defenders must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or drop if the opposition breaks quickly. Because there are only two defenders, the team relies on the midfield to hold a narrow defensive block.

The midfield is a five man unit that acts as the engine of the Arsenal lineup. Timber and Calafiori act as the defensive base, with Timber playing as a right sided pivot and Calafiori providing cover on the left. Rice and Zubimendi sit in the center to shield the two defenders, with Rice using his high pressing intensity to win the ball in midfield. Havertz plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box and connect the lines. This midfield group works to recycle possession and move the ball through the thirds.

Up front, the team uses a front three to stretch the defense. Gyökeres acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Trossard plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while Ødegaard operates on the right. Ødegaard uses his vision and passing range to find the feet of the striker or slide through balls to the runners. The attackers press from the front to force a long ball, allowing the midfielders to win the second ball and start a new attack.

A major advantage of this formation is the overwhelming numerical superiority in the midfield. Having five players in the center makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with the front three and Havertz triggering a press that the rest of the team follows. This creates high turnovers in dangerous areas and allows the team to attack in transition.

This 2-5-3 formation is built to dominate possession and suffocate opponents in their own half. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and struggle to manage high intensity pressing.
