Sassuolo Football Formation
Starting Lineup
maignan · Bremer · Martin · wesley · J Mario · KDB · Paz · Salemekers · Yldiz · Lang · ScamaccaSassuolo looks to control games through high intensity and heavy verticality in a 2-5-3. This formation is built to play a high press and use numbers in the middle to dominate the ball. The goal is to squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position.
Maignan operates behind a narrow defensive line of only two central defenders. Bremer and Martin form the core of this backline, where they must be ready to step up and defend large amounts of space behind them. Because the formation is so thin at the back, Bremer and Martin often act as covering defenders when the midfield is bypassed. They must be dominant in the air and quick to intercept long balls. The defensive unit relies on the midfield to provide a screen, as the two centre-backs are often left isolated in transition.
The midfield acts as a heavy engine room with a double pivot and three attacking midfielders. wesley and J Mario work as the defensive screen, where they look to shield the defence and break up play. KDB occupies the central space to connect the lines, using his passing range to find players in advanced positions. On the flanks, Salemekers and Paz operate in the half-spaces to create overloads. Salemekers moves into attacking positions to link the play, while Paz looks to drive forward and find pockets of space between the lines.
In the final third, Sassuolo employs three attackers to pin the opposition back. Scamacca acts as the central presence, using his physical strength to hold up the ball and link with the others. Yldiz and Lang provide width and goal threat from the wide areas. Yldiz often cuts inside to find shooting lanes, while Lang looks to stretch the defence by staying wide. The front three press in pairs to force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the midfield to win the second ball and start another wave of attack.
A major tactical advantage for Sassuolo is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the midfield to trap opponents. The formation also creates numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for teams to play through the center. When the team wins the ball, the speed of transition allows them to hit in behind the opposition defense before they can get organized.
This aggressive 2-5-3 lineup is designed to overwhelm opponents through central dominance and relentless pressing. It is best suited for games where Sassuolo can dictate the tempo and force the opponent into errors in their own half.
