Because there are only two players in the back, the wide midfielders must work hard to drop back and protect the space behind them when Hamburg lose possession.

The midfield acts as the engine room of this system, utilizing a five man unit to control the center of the pitch. Miro Muheim and Giorgi Gocholeishvili operate as a double pivot to shield the two center backs. Jonas Meffert acts as a central carrier to drive the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. In the half spaces, Nicolai Remberg and Nicolas Capaldo push high to support the front three. This midfield group is designed to compress the space and win the second ball immediately after a turnover.

Up front, Hamburg uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Robert Glatzel acts as the lone striker and target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and win headers. On the flanks, Fabio Baldé and Rayan Philippe act as wide wingers who stay high to pin the opposition full backs. The goal is to create space in the middle for the attacking midfielders to arrive late into the box or to isolate the wingers in one on one situations.
