Atlético focuses on a high press and rapid transitions when playing a 3-5-2. This formation allows the team to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch while maintaining enough bodies to defend against counters. The lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle.

Jan Oblak acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back three consists of Le Normand, Lukeba, and Hancko who defend in a compact zonal line. Le Normand and Hancko act as wide centre-backs to cover the channels, while Lukeba stays central to win the header and clear the lines. This defensive unit is prepared to step up to set the offside trap or drop into a low block if the team needs to protect a lead.

The midfield is a five man unit that connects the defence to the attack. Barrios and Gallagher form a double pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. Gallagher uses his high pressing intensity to hunt the ball, while Barrios sits deeper to receive on the half-turn and recycle possession. Llorente and Baena operate as inverted eights to drive forward with the ball and provide support in the half spaces. Griezmann plays as the attacking ten behind the strikers, using his passing range to split the defence with a through ball and link up play between the lines.

The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards. Sorloth acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header, providing a focal point for long balls. Alvarez plays as a second striker who looks to run in behind and hit in behind on the transition. The two forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball. When attacking, the team uses the width of the midfield to create overlaps and find the feet of the striker in central areas.

Atlético gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield. The presence of five players in the middle allows the team to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opponents. Another strength is the speed of transition, as Griezmann and the wide midfielders can immediately look to exploit space as soon as the ball is won.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a very compact defensive block that is hard to break down centrally. It is best suited for matches against teams that rely on heavy possession and struggle when pressured in their own half.
