Milan operates with an extremely aggressive identity using a 3-3-4 formation. This lineup is built to play with high intensity and verticality to overwhelm the opponent. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and move forward as quickly as possible to catch the defense off guard.

Maignan stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit consists of a back three with Gabbia, Pavlovic, and De Winter. Gabbia stays central to defend the middle while Pavlovic and De Winter shift to cover the wide channels. They defend zonally and aim to keep the distance between the defenders and the midfield very small. Maignan can sweep behind the line to intercept long balls when the team plays with a high line.

The midfield works to control the center through a single pivot system. Luka Modric sits in front of the defense to dictate play, using his passing range and vision to move the ball. Youssouf Fofana and Loftus-cheek occupy the spaces ahead of him. Fofana works to win the second ball and shield the back three, while Loftus-cheek carries the ball forward to drive through the lines. This midfield group aims to press in a mid-block or trigger a press high to win it back high up the pitch.

The attack consists of four players pushing into the final third. Estupinian and Saelemakers act as wide wingers to stretch the defence. Estupinian stays wide to deliver crosses, whereas Saelemakers looks to cut inside and create space. In the center, Rafa Leao and V. Boniface form a powerful partnership. Leao uses his dribbling and pace to attack the space behind the defense and drive at opponents. Boniface plays to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. They press the opposition back line constantly to force a long ball.

A major strength of this AC Milan formation is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the attacking zone. By having four players high up the pitch, they can easily isolate wide players in one on one situations. The coordinated waves of players make it very difficult for the opposition to defend the central areas and the flanks at the same time.

This 3-3-4 formation is a bold way to play that relies on high pressure and rapid transitions. It is best used when facing a side that struggles to deal with constant pressure and high numbers in the box.
