Mainz Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Benedict Hollerbach · Jae-Sung Lee · Paul Nebel · Philipp Mwene · Anthony Caci · Kaishu Sano · Nadiem Amiri · Dominik Kohr · Stefan Bell · Danny da Costa · Robin ZentnerMainz looks to play a direct and aggressive style of football using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup focuses on pressing high up the pitch and hitting opponents on the transition. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition and create chances through quick vertical play.
Robin Zentner starts between the posts to command his area. The back line operates as a back three where Stefan Bell sits centrally to win the header and organize the unit. Danny da Costa acts as the right centre-back to provide cover, while Dominik Kohr plays as the left centre-back to help play out from the back. This defensive unit works to stay compact and squeeze the space between the lines.
The midfield relies on a four man unit that provides both width and central control. Kaishu Sano and Nadiem Amiri occupy the central spaces to win the second ball and connect the defence to the attack. Nadiem Amiri looks to create from deep with his passing range. On the flanks, Anthony Caci and Philipp Mwene act as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width. They must track back to help the defenders and then push up to overlap the wingers.
Up front, Mainz utilizes three attackers to pin the opposition back. Benedict Hollerbach leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the opposition. Paul Nebel and Jae-Sung Lee operate as wide attackers who look to cut inside and find space in the half-spaces. These forwards work in combinations to create runs in behind the defensive line. They press from the front to win the ball high up the pitch.
One major advantage for Mainz is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using the front three and the wide midfielders, the team can trigger a press to win the ball back in dangerous areas. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Anthony Caci and Paul Nebel move into the same channel. This creates space for others to arrive late into the box.
This 3-4-3 formation relies on high intensity and quick transitions to disrupt the opponent. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
