Starting Lineup

Kvaratskhelia · Griezmann · Firmino · Benzema 21-2 · Yamal · De Jong · Gvardiol · Stones · Alaba · Neuer · Van Dijk 17-9

Man City play with a heavy emphasis on high pressing and verticality in this 2-5-3 formation. The lineup is built to dominate the ball in the middle third and quickly strike when the opposition fails to clear their lines. By using a very aggressive attacking stance, Man City look to squeeze the space in the opponent's half and win the ball back high up the pitch.

Manuel Neuer sits behind a staggered back line consisting of only two central defenders. Alaba and Van Dijk act as ball playing defenders who can step into midfield to create a temporary numerical advantage. Van Dijk uses his aerial strength to defend long balls, while Alaba covers the space behind to sweep behind the high line. This pairing must be extremely disciplined to hold the line and stop any direct runs in behind.

The midfield functions as a five man unit designed to control the center of the pitch. De Jong sits in the middle to receive between the lines and progress through the thirds with his driving runs. Stones and Gvardiol operate on the left and right of the central trio to provide width and help recycle possession. In the half spaces, Firmino and Griezmann act as two tens who look to play through the lines and find the forwards. Firmino is known for his pressing intensity and ability to link play, while Griezmann uses his passing range to find teammates.

The attacking front three focuses on stretching the defence across the entire pitch. Benzema operates as a lone striker and a focal point to hold up the ball and wait for support. On the flanks, Yamal and Kvaratskhelia play as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposing full backs apart. This movement creates space in the middle for Griezmann and Firmino to arrive late into the box. The goal is to use the width to create cutbacks from the byline or allow Benzema to find space for one on one situations.

Manchester City gain a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield. Having five players in that area allows them to compress the midfield and win the second ball frequently. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the two attacking midfielders to force a long ball. This high press makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk high reward system that relies on aggressive pressing and central dominance. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back and can be overwhelmed by a high block.
