Germany National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Wirtz · Gnabry · Musiala · Adeyemi · Gündogan · Goretzka · Kimmich · Raum · Rüdiger · Anton · LenoGermany plays a very aggressive game, looking to win the ball back high up the pitch immediately. The lineup relies on an extreme high press and a vertical style of play using a 2-5-3 formation. It is built to squeeze the space in the opponent's half and force a long ball from the opposition.
Leno stays between the posts to command the area. Because of the high line, Rüdiger and Anton act as the only two defenders, playing as ball playing center backs who step up to intercept. Rüdiger uses his physical strength to defend man-to-man, while Anton provides cover to sweep behind the high line. The whole unit works to squeeze the pitch, with the defenders pushing high to keep the play in the attacking third.
The midfield is the engine room for Die Mannschaft. Kimmich and Raum operate as a double pivot to protect the two defenders and deny the pivot of the opposition. Goretzka and Gündogan work in the central areas to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Gündogan often drops deep to receive the ball and help the team progress through the thirds. Musiala plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, using his dribbling to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to the front three.
Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Gnabry leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, working to pin the last defender. Wirtz and Adeyemi operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chances in central areas. To break the line, Wirtz often finds the feet of the striker or plays a one-two. Adeyemi uses his pace to hit in behind on the transition, while the wingers pull wide to spread the play before cutting into the box.
The main advantage of this 2-5-3 is the massive numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the middle allows the team to dominate possession and compress the midfield easily. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using Musiala and the front three to trigger a press. This makes it hard for teams to play short from the back without making mistakes.
This formation creates an overwhelming attacking presence through intense pressing and central control. It is best suited for matches where Germany wants to dominate a low block or punish teams that try to play short from the back.
